Personality: To those he meets, Doji Makoto is gentle, personal, and charming. He says the right things, he makes the right gestures, and he never seems to be uncomfortable, no matter what kind of turn the conversation takes. His calm demeanor has earned him the moniker "the Smiling Blade." All of this, of course, is just a lifetime of study and practice.
Being groomed to be be the face of the Crane Clan took a boy with a promising lineage and created the perfect social samurai. Untouchable in the courts due to his status as Clan Champion and untouchable in duels due to his skill with a sword, Makoto is very proud, and practically fearless. Upon meeting a merchant that was causing trouble in his town, Makoto met with the man and killed him on the spot in a duel (making sure to pay for damages and play with the street children while he was there), completely sure that he would not be in danger and that there would be no repercussions.
But below his beautiful, carefree samurai exterior is a man who understands the 'game'. His charm and wit are tools to create stronger relationships, which benefit him and his clan. His unshakable calm is a barrier to prevent missteps in socializing that could cost him. In a meeting with the (insane) Scorpion Clan Champion, he greets him as any friend. After the two share a drink of (mostly) harmless snake venom, Makoto thanks the Scorpion for the drink and finishes the cup, as is customary. By the end of the meeting, Makoto's careful social tactics even allow the two to create an alliance.
For Makoto, interacting with a person consists of acting and reacting appropriately. He constantly judges the best course of action for the most beneficial result, whether it be to play with the children in the street or drink a cup of poison. Once rapport has been established, he is much more likely to get what he wants. This is not to say he is heartless, though. He does have genuine empathy, especially for those beneath his station (perceived or otherwise). Makoto also has a soft spot for children.
Many of his flaws lie in his upbringing. He has lived at one of the highest stations in his society all his life, and has never personally known true hardship. Everyone he has ever met has respected him due to his position, and the law of his land allows him to discipline whomever forgets this respect. If he were an equal to others, his ingrained social cues would suddenly be inappropriate. His expertise in court is useless when he is struggling to find a trade he can used to afford to pay for a home. His skill with a blade is useless when there are laws that keep him from using it.
